Spotlight Show to feature Shirley Schmale
The featured artist for a two week show at the Yaquina Art Association Gallery from December 17-December 30 is Shirley Schmale. The gallery is located at 789 NW Beach Drive in the Nye Beach Turnaround, Newport Oregon. Gallery hours are 11 am to 4 pm daily. There will also be hand made Christmas items available in the gallery to enjoy or purchase.
Shirley Schmale always had a love of art, but didn’t have an opportunity to try her hand at painting until 2000, when she retired.
Her first teacher was Pam Ingalls from Vashon Island, who works exclusively in oils and specializes in Russian Impressionism. Shirley took drawing lessons from Pam, and had just begun painting when she and her husband, Fred, moved to Lincoln City after he retired.
She learned about the Artist’s Studio Association classes in Lincoln City and began watercolor classes with local artist, Arlon Gilliland. Encouraged by Arlon, she entered a few shows and began winning ribbons.
A year later, she joined the Yaquina Art Association in Newport, attending the watercolor classes on Monday mornings.
She has since attended week-long workshops, conducted jointly by Bev Jozwiak and Vickie Nelson, who are nationally recognized watercolor artists, and has also taken several workshops with Lynn Lasneski, an oil painting teacher, formerly in the Depoe Bay area.
She will be showing paintings in both oil and watercolor in the Spotlight Show.
