Yaquina Art Gallery Spotlight features pastel paintings by group, December 9 – December 22
Pastel painting can be soft and gentle or a wildly vibrant expression that jumps from the underlying surface. Yaquina Art Association’s Pastel Class members will display both for a showcase beginning December 9 through Dec 22. See all at the gallery.
Pastels create a beautiful and velvety matt composition. Pastels are powdered pigments with something that binds the powder. The colored pigments are similar to those used in oil paints and range widely over 1,500 colors. Pastels have been used by artists since the Renaissance, including da Vinci. A pastel painting is created by using a small applicator or even fingers. Pastels may be soft or somewhat hardened even to form pencils or crayons. Upon completion, the pastel image is affixed with a spray. Using pastels gives the artist good control over the amount of color and its position on a surface.
JOIN OUR GROUP: YAA offers a free workspace and supportive environment for pastel artists at all levels on Tuesday afternoons from 1 – 3 pm. The class is open to members and nonmembers at no charge. See the Gallery attendant for more information.
SHOWCASE ARTISTS are Beverly Peterson, Luella Hartwell, Michelle Mathews, Susan Miller, and Deanna Trail. The work of Charlotte Carter, a beloved pastel YAA instructor, will also be shown.
