Yaquina Art Gallery Spotlight Wall Show featuring the photography of Michael Carr – September 17th to September 30th
In a two-week Spotlight Wall Show from September 17th to September 30th, the Yaquina Art Association will be featuring the photography of Michael Carr. The Yaquina Art Association Gallery is located in Nye Beach at 789 NW Beach Drive. Hours of operation are 11 am to 4 pm every day. Michael Carr now lives on the Oregon coast. He is a native of Montana, where he lived for over 50 years. He now spends his days learning from webinars like Photoshop etc., and shooting photos of seascapes. He also works part time in a couple of art galleries. His deepest ambition is to become the best nature photographer possible.
He has a degree in photography with over forty years of experience. His photos grace homes in Europe, Asia, and North America. He’s photographed from the Bahamas, Mexico, and as far north as Alaska. He’s taken photos of at least 30 states.
He’s been charged by a black bear and bull elk, stalked by mountain lions, and nipped at by alpha female wolves defending their young. He’s photographed American bison, moose, badgers, and lynx, where the results could have been… unpleasant if he startled them. He tries to give all animals the space and respect they deserve, but sometimes he is just as startled as they are. He uses up to a 600mm lens to ensure space for the creatures.
His health, or the lack thereof, is the largest barrier stopping him from accomplishing his dreams. He has asbestosis disease he got from his hometown as a youth, and during a work accident 59% of his lungs were chemically burned. But it is the multiple strokes that prove the largest difficulty; three massive strokes and 14 minor ones in the past two and a half years.
After his first stroke, he was completely paralyzed on his right side. He was banished to a wheelchair. He feared his dream was dead. The physical pain and discomfort were secondary. With the help of his loving wife and a good physical therapist, he was able to get out of the wheelchair and learned to walk again. And at the conclusion of six months, he was finally able to pick up his camera again! He’s developed a newfound appreciation for what his body can do.
The photos present today are the accumulation of his life’s work, and his individualized vision. He’s been told on many occasions that he has a unique style.
