Sylvia A. Hosie Showcase at the Yaquina Art Center June 25th through July 8th – “New Work: The Covid Years”

YAA Spotlight

In a two week Spotlight Wall Show from June 25th to July 8th, the Yaquina Art Association will be featuring the Photography of Sylvia Hosie. The Yaquina Art Association Gallery is located in Nye Beach at 789 NW Beach Drive. Hours of operation are 11 am to 5 pm every day.

Sylvia A. Hosie, a fine art photographer, presents new work created in the past two years.  These years are like no other in recent memory.  March 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic became real.  Lockdown shrunk everyone’s horizons.  For Hosie it meant isolation from family and friends.  Travel plans and photo trips could only be dreamed about.  She soon realized she could “social distance” with the local birdlife.  Hosie relates “My longest lens, a Canon 100-400 mm, would get me close enough to the larger birds.  About the same time I started trying to create high-key images.  On grey days I could overexposed by two or three stops of light.  This technique minimized both sky and water.   These birds against a white backdrop became a symbol of unlimited possibilities in a shrinking world.  When weather or birds were not cooperating, I turned to my photo archive and reworked or reimagined the bird images there.”

During this period Hosie also began exploring ICM, intentional camera movement.  By purposely moving the camera with a slow shutter speed a softer, more fluid image is created.  Some are very recognizable like her wave series, while others are abstractions.

Hosie has been a member of the Yaquina Art Association since 1984.  She sells her work at the Yaquina Art Center on the Nye Beach Turnaround.  Here you can find her photographic prints, cards and coffee mugs.  Her website is sylviahosiephotography.com.
