Yaquina Art Gallery Spotlight Wall Show featuring the photography of Walt Duvall and John Legeman – December 7th to December 20th

YAA Spotlight

In a two week Spotlight Wall Show from December 7th to December 20th, the Yaquina Art Association will be featuring the photography of Walt Duvall and John Legeman. The Yaquina Art Association Gallery is located in Nye Beach at 789 NW Beach Drive. Hours of operation are 11 am to 4 pm every day.

Walter Duvall, local landscape artist in photography, began his photographic journey 54 years ago in high school when he was inspired by black and white photographer, Ansel Adams. He took correspondence courses through the New York Institute of Photography while in the service in the 1970s and has continued to seek photographic knowledge through workshops, seminars and online courses.

In 2002 he discovered digital photography and in 2014, when he began a transitional retirement from his 34 years as a Certified Financial Planner and investment advisor, he began devoting more time to his lifelong passion of photography working with such professionals as Art Wolfe, Mark Adamus, David Middleton and Brenda Berry. He has been published, both in magazines and brochures, won numerous awards, and has donated his time and talent to the Alaska Raptor Center, Sitka Conservation Society, Oregon Coast Community Forrest Association and Newport Fishermen’s Wives, to help promote their non-profit images in their various communities.

Currently, Mr. Duvall is a member of Yaquina Arts Association, Yaquina Arts Association Photographers (YAAP), and Oregon Central Coast Photography Group. “My photography is influenced by three professional photographers” explains Duvall. “First, from Ansel Adams who said, ‘You don’t take a photograph, you make it; David Middleton who taught me, ‘Don’t settle for mediocrity’ and ‘Watch the edges of your image’, lastly Art Wolfe who told me, ‘Don’t take a postcard, look for art in a scene’. These words”, states Duvall, “follow me every time I venture out to record nature”.

You can visit Mr. Duvall’s website at walterduvallphotography.smugmug.com or you can see some of his work at Yaquina Arts Gallery at the Nye Beach Turnaround.

Photographer John Legeman was born in Long Beach, CA. His interest in the visual arts was first cultivated by his mother, who would drive the reluctant teenage John and his younger brother in a Renault stick shift from Long Beach to the LA County Museum of Art.

John had an English teacher in high school, Irving Cox, who encouraged his students to make creative film projects based on literary works. This led John to buying his own Super 8 film camera and making movies for himself and Community College film classes.

John had been teaching English for about two decades when his school began moving into the Digital Age. His principal recruited him to teach the new subject of Digital Photography. John had to take night classes in film photography for his teaching credential.

John retired and moved to the Oregon Coast in the summer of 2011. He enjoys walking the forests and beaches with his camera, shooting in both black and white and color. The natural beauty of the Oregon Coast inspires John for his photos. Sunsets, streaming light through forests, beach and river scenes, and more moments of nature can be found in John’s photos.
