Spotlight on Local Artists
July 11 through July 24 the spotlight is on two talented female artists, Catherine Hingson and Sherie Powell at the Yaquina Art Association Gallery in Nye Beach. The gallery is open daily from 11 to 5 pm and visitors are welcome at 789 NW Beach Drive in Newport, Oregon.
Catherine Hingson paints bold Northwest scenes often depicting Marine subjects. She is a Northwest native, who first came to Newport in 1992. Catherine has been painting for over 25 years and currently has her artwork displayed at the Pacific Artist’s Co-op Gallery in Lincoln City (where she serves as President of the organization) as well as the Nye Beach Gallery operated by Yaquina Art Association.
She teaches art classes locally. Her next class, “Beachscapes” is July 28 1-4pm at Artist’s Studio Association in Lincoln City. There is still room in this watercolor/acrylic one day workshop for $20.00 plus your supplies. If interested please call 503-545-9339. Catherine Hingson has been a member of Yaquina Art Association for 1 1/2 years, and is also a member of the photography club affiliated with YAA. “The Nye Beach Gallery run by YAA is a great place to pick up some good local art for very reasonable prices.” stated Catherine Hingson. Sherrie Powell began her journey in photography while assisting her father in his photography business and working in his darkroom. That was over 50 years ago in the days of film. Since then photography has gone through another transformation and now Sherrie captures images and processes them in a digital lightroom. She says, “Photography has undergone dramatic changes since the introduction of digital technology. Digital photography allows for much more creativity. It has opened up a whole new world of artistic expression.”
Her photographs have earned numerous awards and have been accepted into international competition. The most recent award was “Best of Show” at the Gresham Visual Arts Gallery. Most of her photographs are taken in and around the Pacific Northwest. She is currently a member of the Yaquina Arts Association, Yachats Arts Guild, Nature Photographers of the Pacific Northwest, PSA, and the Lincoln City Farmers Market Association.
