YAA Spotlights the artwork of Alana and John Williams
The Yaquina Art Association’s Artist Spotlight Show will feature the artwork of Alana Williams with the Photography and Woodturnings of husband John Williams. The two week showing will begin Saturday June 13th and runs for two weeks to Friday June 26th.
Alana Williams has always been creative; beginning with her High School in Ogden, Utah where she was introduced to pottery. There she learned how to form clay and throw pots on a wheel. After earning her college degree in Business Administration, Alana began her love of Folk Art and Decorative Painting. She attended many workshops and took classes from several renowned artists such as Jo Sonja Jansen. She developed more creative interests with woodworking, dried floral arrangements and herb gardening. Alana began to sell her art and crafts at local shops and regional shows. Five years ago she joined the Yaquina Art Association and took her first watercolor classes. Alana loved this medium and has been devoting her time to watercolor and acrylic painting. Her favorite subjects are flowers and animals. In the YAA gallery Alana sells her watercolor paintings, hand painted wooden boxes, and “Collage On Wood” creations.
John Williams has been an avid photographer since the 70’s. His photographs reflect his attraction to coastal subjects having grown up in a commercial fishing family on the Mendocino Coast of California. He became interested in photography in his teens but it was observing Ansel Adams photographing the Coast of Mendocino County that really influenced him. The techniques that Adams used changed the way John approaches his own picture making. After retiring from 40 year career as an Electrical Engineer he is now able to devote his time to photography and the other talent of woodturning. He began turning in 1981 when he added a wood lathe to his wood shop in North Albany Oregon. He seriously began to turn wood objects after contacting Peter Child, a renowned British wood turner who taught him the proper methods to turn artistic pieces. Today John has a wood shop south of Seal Rock where he makes Bowls, Plates, Salt and Pepper grinders and specialty item when not photographing. John shows and sells in the YAA and at local open air markets alongside his wife; Alana.
The Yaquina Art Association Gallery is located at the foot of the Nye beach turnaround at 789 NW Beach Dr. Hours are 10am to 5pm daily.
