There will be a two week spotlight featuring the art of Debbie Olson and Mary Young. The show will run from Dec. 14 to Dec. 27th and is open daily from 11 am to 4 pm. The Yaquina Art Association Gallery is located in the Historic Nye Beach area of Newport at 789 NW Beach Drive just west of the VAC. There will also be an arts and crafts Holiday Show with many gift ideas for unique local items.
Debbie Olson grew up in the Monterey Bay area and Mt. Shasta, California. She studied art at the College of the Siskiyous in Weed, California. After a career as a realtor and retiring in Idaho as a restaurant owner, Debbie has moved to Waldport, Oregon for part of the year and also to Cascade, Idaho. Her heart is between the Pacific Coast and the stunning mountains, rivers and lakes of Central Idaho. She loves the nautical gestures that the Oregon Coast has to offer, the sound of the waves, and the lush green habitat of the coastal mountains. Debbie feels honored to have the opportunity to please others through her art.
Debbie’s father had been in civil service and was a part-time commercial fisherman. She spent much of her childhood surrounded by beautiful beaches, majestic mountains, quiet clear streams, and her father’s boat, the “Debbie O”. Some of her fondest memories are with him. She enjoys spending time with family and grandchildren and doing what she truly loves and that is painting. Debbie has raised two wonderful sons and has been blessed with six grandchildren and one great grandson, who all warm her heart.
Mary Young loves happy things. My best work makes me smile or laugh, and in turn makes others smile and laugh too. Mary says, “I am inspired in a big way by nature and animals. Playing and experimenting with color is a huge part of my glass work as well. I find joy in creating color combinations that just sing together. I also love the sublime result of creating monochromatic art pieces. The beauty of glass is its infinite variety of uses and techniques. You can do anything you can possibly think of.”
Mary will be displaying Fused Glass Artwork or “Warm Glass”. She is inspired by the art world and the artists that make wonderful handmade pieces of art. She stumbled on fused glass when her father purchased a kiln. She began experimenting with it and found her niche. Mary is a member of the YAA and has served on the Board of Directors for several years. Her work can also be seen at the Newport and Lincoln City Farmers Markets, the Sparks Gallery in Depoe Bay and Ocean Beaches Glassblowing & Gallery. Mary moved here 7 years ago from the Portland and Vancouver area.
