Lecture: “HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR ART COPY PHOTOS IN FOUR EASY STEPS”

When an artist wants to capture a photographic image of their original art for the purpose of posting it on their web site, social media or for a submission to be juried into an art society, contest, art fair or gallery, they often find that task to be very challenging.

Newport’s Master Photographer, Vern Bartley, has been a professional photographer for a little over 50 years and has been involved exclusively in the Fine Art Gallery and Photographic business throughout the Northwest for the past 16 years, the past 10 of those on the Central Oregon Coast.

During that time a number of local artists approached him wanting to know if he would professionally copy their original art and provide them with high resolution digital files for their personal use, often explaining that they had “shot” their art work with their Point and Shoot or phone cameras only to have their submissions rejected due to the poor quality of their photographs.

Vern says. “It was the perfect opportunity for me to give back !” He developed a one hour presentation, “HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR ART COPY PHOTOS IN FOUR EASY STEPS” specifically for artists that struggle with today’s digital cameras and working with digital files. “Artists don’t need to pay a professional for a lot of what they do. They often photograph their art with their point & shoot or phone cameras. Those images will normally meet their very basic needs. So, I developed this presentation to help them when copying their own art that does not have to meet stringent calibrated standards. It also allows me to educate local artists on when to enlist the services of a professional to minimize rejections because of poor quality, which can be a real deal breaker for them.”

Over the years Vern has developed a sophisticated art copy workflow that renders near perfect reproduction copies of the artists original work. The key to his predictable outcome is to make sure every step of the process is within the industries calibration standards. His camera, lens, media storage, computer, monitor, color space, white point, and output file formats all talk to each other in the same calibrated language. He says “It’s kinda like the secret sauce”. He went on to say “When I pair my unique, custom built, art copy lighting system with my post production, closed loop system workflow…… the finished products are Art Copies that truly match the artists original work.
