YAA Spotlights Photographers Donna McCoy and Sherrie Powell
Spotlight Artists and Photographers Donna McCoy and Sherrie Powell will be featured at the Yaquina Art Association Gallery in Nye Beach, Newport Oregon. The show will run from Saturday, August 6 through Fri. August 19, 2011 daily from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is located at 789 Beach Drive next to the Visual Art Center at the Nye Beach Turnaround.
Photographer Donna McCoy will be sharing Pools of Art, a collection of intertidal photographs taken during negative tides along the Oregon coast. Her favorite images are super close-up. She says, “sometimes the closer I get, the more art I see.”
Donna McCoy combines her love of photography with that of observing small animals. As a child, summers were spent with a magnifying glass chasing bugs.
Today she shares that passion as she captures animals on film.
Extreme low tides along the Oregon coast expose pools of art for those who explore the ocean’s edge. Tida! pools scattered with green anenomes, spikey purple urchins, and bright orange nudibranchs (also known as sea slugs) are just a few of the treasured art exposed when the tide is out. Often outfitted with a macro lens and waders, it brings Donna a great joy to explore, capture on (digital) film and share amazing details that exist on our small planet, colors, patterns and textures.
“I enjoy working within one inch – a world just within the reach of the human eye. I love being surprised by the art hidden just within sight. My job is to find and share. The art is already there.”
Sherrie Powell loves photographing the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. Since relocating to the Newport area about 6 years ago she finds inspiration everywhere. She strives to not only share the beauty of the moment, but to convey the feeling she had at the time she clicked the shutter. She has been involved in photography for over 50 years. Most recently attended the Photography Program at Spokane Falls Community College to update and expand her knowledge.
Her work has been juried into exhibits and competitions including international competition. It has won several awards and has been published in a book, locally, and on the internet.
Sherrie is a member of the Yaquina Arts Association, Yachats Arts Guild, and Lincoln City Farmers and Crafters Market Association. Her work can be seen at the Yaquina Arts Association Gallery, The Wine Place Gallery, on Sundays at the Lincoln City Farmers and Crafters Market, The Fat Mermaid and various area venues.
