Spotlight show featuring the work of Jane Hodgkins March 25th – April 7th
The latest diverse work of Jane Hodgkins will be showcased in the Spotlight Show at the Yaquina Art Association Gallery and Gift Shop from Saturday, March 25 through Friday, April 7. In the spotlight will be many examples of her expertise in print making techniques as well as paper making.
Hodgkins said, “Printmaking is fun and challenging because the possibilities are so endless. The first step is creating an interesting image. Then just by changing the paper or the color of the ink, the image is transformed. Overlaying one image upon another can also add interest. It’s finding that combination that is just perfect, that is so thrilling. My other passion is booking making, it is a fun way to showcase successful images.”
The Spotlight show will feature small prints, leather and paper journals, artist books, and pottery pieces. Three types of printing methods will be featured; linocut prints, silkscreen prints, and drypoint etchings. Some of the prints combine more than one of the printing methods. Some of the linocuts were used to create clay covers for the journals.
Hodgkins, who has lived on the Oregon Coast for over 20 years, retired a year and a half ago from Oregon Coast Community College after a decade and a half as director of the career and technical education programs. Two of the long standing important programs she helped develop include nursing and aquarium science.
The week after retiring, Hodgkins returned to the college as a student in the printmaking class and started attending the ceramic classes at YAA. And now, when the weather is nice and dry, she enjoys paper making on the front deck. Some of her handmade papers are then used to print on or in the journals. She also enjoys beach walking looking for agates and interesting driftwood which helps fuel her artistic talent.
Hodgkins gives credit to Julia Pence and Helen Ichien Abe, printmaking instructors at OCCC, for their instruction, guidance, and encouragement for helping her develop her printmaking techniques. She’d also like to thank Ken Hartwell, Lynn Bishop, and other colleagues in the Tuesday Pottery class for sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm for ceramics.
The historic, oceanfront gallery is located at the end of the Nye Beach Turnaround at 789 Beach Drive in Newport. Gallery hours are from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. every day.
