The artwork of Rosemary Sumner and Lanie Shimer will be displayed for a two week spotlight show at the Yaquina Art Association Gallery in Nye Beach at 789 NW Beach Drive. The show will be open from April 5 to April 18, 2014. The gallery is open from 11 am to 4 pm daily.
Rosemary Sumner has enjoyed drawing since childhood and was fortunate to have art classes in high school. She won first prize for a pastel self-portrait. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Art degree in Visual Design from Auburn’s School of Architecture and Fine Art. She has raised a family and worked for over 27 years in the art department of a printing company near the university.
Rosemary Sumner says, “Nothing gives me pleasure like putting my brush to canvas. It is so much a part of who I am. Inspiration is often found in things that other people overlook – a lone seagull, a couple stopping at a flower market, sea lions basking in the sun, a worker in the field – my subjects are quite varied. I’ve used different mediums to express myself but painting with acrylic works best for me. I love color and my works are often quite vivid. I love to experiment with color and use it in unexpected ways. After reading a book called “Brilliant Color” I started seeing color differently.
I’ve been fortunate over the past ten years to travel and see some breathtaking art in Paris and Amsterdam and have been influenced by many artists. In recent years my art has become more abstracted and graphic in nature, which is probably a result of my design education and many years in the printing industry.”
Lanie Shimer loves working with brass and copper. She is one of the few women who enjoys working with a torch and welder. She has been doing her art for the last 13years. She loves working with her hands and combines that with walks on the beach looking for those perfect pieces of driftwood to compliment her work. Often her inspiration for the art comes from the driftwood itself. She loves focusing her art on trees and branches as well and sculpts the brass and copper to look like that.
Lanie’s work can be seen at the Newport Farmers Markets, the Yaquina Art Gallery and new this spring, at the Whales Tail on Bay Blvd in Newport.
