Martin Waugh – Liquid Sculpture®
The Yaquina Art Association Photographers (YAAP) will feature Martin Waugh with an amazing program called ” Liquid Sculpture” on Feb. 3, 2014 at 7 pm. Martin Waugh, renowned photographer, will use images to illustrate and demonstrate the sophisticated set ups, equipment and props used to create his liquid sculptures. YAAP has opened up this program to the community. The cost for this program is $5 for non members or $10 to join YAAP. Seating is limited. Monthly instructional programs are on the first Monday of the month in the upstairs classroom of the Visual Art Center located in the Nye Beach turnaround in Newport, Oregon.
Martin’s artistic and technical methods capture the smooth and effortless curves of liquid, evoking a childlike sense of fun and whimsy. Interpretations of his work often reveal as much about the viewer as the artist. His images are engaging metaphors for life. They are as intriguing to the eye as they are stimulating to the imagination. Martin loves combining art and science to capture nature’s infinite beauty.
Inspired by the work of Dr. Harold Edgerton, Martin pioneered the process of controlling liquids and light to create his Liquid Sculpture images. Using high-speed photography, precise coordination, and meticulous illumination he explores the intricate landscape of drops and splashes, exposing their complexity and beauty. In his immodestly titled talk, “High-Speed Macro Photography of a Nearly-Invisible Non-linear Subject”, Martin discusses the challenges of stopping motion, lighting a transparent object, and controlling chaos.
Martin received his B.S. degree in Physics from Lewis and Clark College in Oregon. He lives in Portland, where he has kayaked many of the local gorgeous white water rivers. His work can be found in museum, corporate, and private art collections.
